My personal feeling is end of February/beginning of March. I don't know where InCdier/A+ got its source when it said "6.0 should be out by the time you read this." A2-Central has an article, written by the 6.0 product manager, that says he HOPES (accuratley reporting the news Tim :) 6.0 will be in the hands of users by February 14th. Be patient. 6.0 is a major upgrade with a lot of features and bug fixes. It'll be a few weeks before the CD is sent off for pressing and then mailed to Partners and Associates. The Apple IIGS's have 1Meg memory and the server and LC's have a 4/40 (4/80 for the server) configuration. We want to run System 7 for the Mac's and System 6 for the GS's. I am assuming that it will work fine together using the same server. Any comments? Still, you're right that it isn't typical in that it asks for all its memory up front, but that's just the point-- other pieces of software find out at some random point in their execution, at which _specific_ point they may not have been tested for out-of-memory conditions (lest you blame the software developers, may I remind you of a Tech Note documenting similar behavior in certain tools). Testing _every_ possible error condition in _every_ location in even a small program can be a tremendously time-consuming activity.My point is, with all the great new stuff in 6.0, there is a corresponding increase in required memory, and running a memory-intensive configuration like AppleShare/AppleTalk, programs (AND tools) will run out of memory much more quickly (especially on a ROM 03 with 1.125Mb). And unlike Merlin 16+, which meets all memory requirements up front, these programs will enter the unstable realm of "Dealing with unanticipated memory problems". The thing that's hard to understand until you've been on the receiving end of endless nitpicking gripes from dozens of users is just how much of an impact that has on a person. Think of the Chinese water torture, or the "death of a thousand pins". No one thing is that serious, and no one comment seems that bad, but the cumulative affect is devastating. Then it surprises folks who haven't received the comments when someone like Tim makes a mild response that isn't even as bad as the original comment after hundreds of other comments.I'm surprised at Tim, too. I'm surprised he doesn't bite a few heads off more often. I would (and have, I'm sorry to say). Matt responds more like a "normal" person, too. Tim takes more grief better than anyone else I know, and still manages to be his own cheerful self 99.9% of the time.Mike Westerfield
